D-Zolve™ 1220 Paint Stripper
D-Zolve™ 1220 is designed to remove hard to strip aircraft paints, painted fiberglass with marine paints, catalyzed polyurethanes with epoxy primer and alkyds. It can be used on aluminum, low strength carbon steel, stainless steel, fiberglass and other metal and plastic substrates.
Properties
When applied to painted surfaces, D-Zolve 1220 penetrates paint layers causing the primer coat to break the bond with the solid substrate and lift together with the topcoat as a single film. Uniform application of D-Zolve 1220 results in a uniform paint lift. The surface to be stripped should be free of oil or any solid contaminants which can interfere with the process of lifting the paint.
Small Area Application
For small areas, D-Zolve 1220 can be applied using a soft paintbrush with thin bristles. It is most effective when applied uniformly, without any voids, in one direction. It can also be airless sprayed.
Large Area Application
Efficient application to large areas can be accomplished by spraying D-Zolve 1220. The spray system should be an airless type. The spray nozzle should be non-atomizing so as to reduce mist and over spray. D-Zolve can be directly pumped from its shipping drum. The air activated pump should have Teflon packing. The flexible liquid hose should have flexible woven stainless steel sheathing and a Teflon or Nylon inner hose. Applying the paint stripper to a fiberglass boat or aircraft should be started from the bottom up. If any areas are void of D-Zolve 1220, those areas will need to be applied again. If the application is too thin, a second application may be needed.
Performance
Allow D-Zolve 1220 to penetrate and lift the painted area. The lifted paint will be soft and very easy to remove. Once the paint film has lifted, it can be removed with a plastic spatula, squeegee, or a bristle broom. The lifted paint should be collected for disposal. After the paint has been removed, the surface can be washed off with high-pressure water. The paint lift time can be greatly reduced if the surface temperature is 85°F or higher. To increase the surface temperature, infrared heating lamps are efficient and economical. Allow 2-6 hours for the paint to lift.
Caution: D-Zolve 1220 is a water-based product which is Formic Acid activated. It should be used with good ventilation. Protective clothing such as gloves, goggles or face shield should be used. Also suggested is using a NIOSH approved respirator with a mechanical filter. For first aid information, see the MSDS. Avoid contact with eyes, skin and clothing.
Disposal
See SDS for disposal information. To meet local pH requirements, the rinse water can be pH adjusted if necessary.
